These are a few my recent iPod repair experiences.
5) Sam R is a college student at UC Santa Cruz. He called to find out if I might be able to help him with a 30GB 4th iPod that he damaged trying to fix a battery problem. As he and spoke he finally to a point in the conversation where he realized he already had Video iPod *and* had two iPod that he really didn't need, this 30GB 4th and a 2nd gen Mini.
We discussed him selling them to me reached an agreement adn I gave him my address. To me they become needed spare parts for other client systems that need replacements.
A day or two later, he put them a Priority Mail envelope and sent them to me. Our agreement was I would send him cash back.
They got here on Thursday and were just what he said they were. On Friday morning I sent him the cash to keep my side of the bargain.. Actually a bit more than we agreed, but I like that he believed in me and that we both lived up to the "guy code".
He should have the cash on Monday and he may even have friends that need I Pod help.
6) Susanne S lives in San Jose (120 miles away). She has a Green 2nd Generation Mini. It looks beautiful and green is the rarest of the colors. She called and described that she has the Sad Face Icon with Starry eyes. Thsi almost always indicates a severe real hard drive failure. But over the course of time, I've found ways to sometimes restore a mechanically faulty drive... there are just tricks you learn over time. Plus says she has a second drive she will send along, that the one in the iPod has been replaced before.
I receive them by courier from a company the next day Wednesday. The iPod, the belt lcip. the USB cable and a LAPTOP hard drive from her CompaQ laptop. I called her and she then remembers that she had her laptop drive replaced.
I work at her Mini for 4 hours changing out things and trying to make sure it's the drive and nothing else. Then to determine if there are any tricks I can do to re-susitate it.
This is a drive beyond being able to save. I email some possibilities but she is bummed I can't salvage it inexpensively.
But the next day the iPods arrive Santa Cruz. I format and re-test the 4GB drive in the Mini, works perfectly and let know of that option. She likes the idea she explains on her way to snowboarding for the weekend.
Fixed - total cost to her, $65 - $25 for the drive and $40 for the labor. It gets sent back to San Jose on Friday afternoon.
7) Mike B lives right here in Santa Rosa. He has two Generation 2 Mini iPods one Silver and One Blue. Each has their own set of needs.
The silver also has the Starry Eyed Sad Face indicating a probable hard disk failure. One again I pull out my trick bag and try everything but can't get it going. I did isolate it to the hard drive and I do have another 4GB drive from another Mini... in this it was my Nephew's who got a new Nano from Grandma for Christmas ;)
Mike agrees to the drive replacement, happily, Fixed - total cost $65
The problem with the Blue one is it's formatted to work on a Mac and He needs it re-formatted to work on a PC. (It was given to him). As part of my here work
I use both. In this case I need to make a back up of his 910 music files on the Mac... move them to the PC, cable the iPod to it, format it newly and then
re-populate the music files to it. It comes off without a problem. Fixed - Total cost to him $15
Do you have an iPod that doesn't work? That you would be happy to pay $40 (plus any needed parts) to get back on it's feet and in your hand again?
