These are a few my recent iPod repair experiences.

Daniel Welch of Killeen TX
had an iPod with water immersion damage. He also waited way too long to get it to me. In his note with the iPod he wrote.." Hi, sorry for the long delay, I e-mailed you maybe a month and a half ago regarding my iPod that may have water damage. It is a 30 gig, video, white. I sent the package to my wife, who enclosed a check and sent it on to you. For some reason the mail getting out of here took forever, hopefully the thing still can be salvaged. "

I'm sorry to say there aren't enough useful parts left of it to make it practical to repair. He was right about the water. It seemed to come in through the scroll wheel area and destroyed the logic board just to the upper right of the scroll wheel which affects scroll wheel and head phone amplification. I couldn't make hard drive also won't work. I got the LCD to work, the Apple logo appears but it never goes through the boot phase because of the drive's problems.

So at the least, we would have been talking about a logic board $90 and a hard drive $70 and labor $40 which brings us to $200 which is about $50 or $60 more than it would be worth if fixed.

The appropriate thing is to send it back to Nikki with a $20 refund and have Dan buy a new one or a good used one. I have tips on my website..."how to select a used iPod"

The image you see is the iPod and the two $10 bills that were sent back as a refund from the $40 mailed in with it. .

Dave Witkowski of Oakton, Virginia

emailed me stating, "Hi - I found your website through Google and was wondering if you could repair the following problem.

I bought an 8 GB nano back in March, and primarily use it while running. I always keep it in a sports wrap, and a few weeks ago, the ipod started skipping, randomly pausing, etc. Then two weeks ago it stopped working altogether. I took it in to the Genius Bar at the local Apple store, and the tech pointed out that there is some corrosion in the port on the bottom of the device. He said that this wouldn't be covered by Apple's warranty and suggested I just buy a new ipod.

This is my second ipod (the first was stolen), and I thought I'd check and see if there was any way to repair it before buying another mp3 player."

I told him to send it in and I would see what I could do. It arrived a few days later and I went to work on his $250 Nano 2nd Gen. It came through surgery smoothly and was sent back with a clean bill of health.

As you can see I got his iPod working perfectly. The battery holds a good charge and the scoll wheel and screen work perfectly. Total cost for Dave... $40 to get his $250 iPod back and working again.

Fixed - Total cost $40.

Maureen Barrett of Medfield Massachusetts
has a son Luke that basically dropped his 80GB Video iPod one time too many and the hard drive stopped working. She and I discussed it and she it in with a check for $110 whoich would cover the $70 drive and the $40 labor/return shipping cost.

When it got here, I realized, he had the larger drive. It had never been discussed before and called say that I had quoted a 30GB drive. I did have an 80GB drive but it was $140.

I spent a moment on the phone with both Maureen and Luke discussing what I call "iPod Theory". Stated briefly no iPod can go without being recharged for more than 13 hours. Since almost everyone recharges their ipod on the same computer they have their iTunes running on... making program changes by switching out a playlist on the iPod takes about 5 seconds out of the 90 minute recharge cycle.

Since you can switch and replace music and videos using playlists in seconds at re-charge...in essence a 30GB iPod have the capability of being a 300GB iPod by switching your material effectively.

Luke didn't want to contemplate the thought of having a 30GB drive instead of the 80GB and he agreed to pay for $70 upcharge to have the 80GB drive installed.

Fixed - Total cost $180.
